Association for Project Safety APS Accredited Programmes

Introduction to Principal Designer (PD) Role

Duration: 1 Day

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the Principal Designer role. It is aimed at clients and designers who may be undertaking the PD role whilst additionally engaging a CDM adviser to discharge the PD functions on their behalf for medium and large projects. Content is also beneficial for those designers undertaking the Principal Designer role for smaller, less complex, projects.


Principal Designer

Duration: 2 Days

This hands-on course is specifically aimed at Designers aiming to take on the Principal Designer role. This course, whilst similar to the three-day Management of Pre-Construction Health and Safety programme, contains important design risk management training and concentrates on exactly how the PD role should be discharged, proportionate to any size of project. The course includes practical workshops and an individual who successfully completes a Principal Designer Accredited Course may claim points as allocated in the Qualifications and Experience table towards membership of APS.


The Management of Pre-Construction Health and Safety

Duration: 3 Days This hands-on course is aimed at individuals wishing to become a CDM Adviser to Clients, Designers or Contractors under the CDM2015 Regulations. This is an updated version of the Management of CDM Co-ordination course, that has been so successfully run over the last eight years and includes less background legislation and more practical knowledge.

The course covers:

  • Understanding Risks, Hazards, the Principles of Prevention and Risk Management processes.
  • SSIP, PAS91, CSCS Cards and other schemes.
  • Construction 2025, HSE Construction Plan of Work, HSE Campaigns etc.
  • Legal Aspects and Implications.
  • Asbestos, Lead, Silica and other Health issues, Temporary Works, and Working at Height Awareness.
  • Site-Wide Health and Safety Issues.
  • CDM Regulations 2015 – Duty Holders, Application, Detailed Interpretation.
  • Principal Designer Service, Pre-Construction Co-Ordination Process, Construction Procurement, Additional CDM Services, Advising Clients on other Pre-Construction Risk Management Matters, Undertaking Construction Site Monitoring for Clients.

An individual who successfully completes the accredited course in The Management of Pre-construction Health and Safety may claim points as allocated in the Qualifications and Experience table towards meeting full membership of APS.

CDM Construction (Design and Management) Provision

We deliver a comprehensive range of CDM and Health & Safety training and consultancy. Our team of experienced trainers has developed a suite of CDM Training courses that can be tailored to your company’s specific needs. Our training focuses on the purpose of CDM, focusing on the thought process of Design Risk Management (DRM). DRM is the application of the General Principles of Prevention (PoP) which is the “key to CDM”. We have developed our material and courses ensuring that, rather than being a box ticking exercise, attendance ensures maximum benefits for delegates, managing design risks and information so projects can be built, used, maintained and eventually re-cycled (refurbished or demolished) safely and healthily.

Consultancy Services

Our team of leading specialists consists of Principal Designers, Client Advisers, Principal Designer Advisers and Safety Advisers. Team members are also Certified Members of the Association for Project Safety (APS). Our support includes standalone CDM-related consultancy to aid Clients, Principal Designers and Principal Contractors in fulfilling their duties under the CDM Regulations 2015.

We focus on providing up-to-date and pragmatic advice and consultancy. Our skills are in meeting the necessary statutory requirements effectively whilst minimising bureaucracy and unnecessary paperwork, making what we do specific to the project needs and educating our clients and their design teams as a critical part of the process.
